Waiting Period vs Policy Period: What Is the Difference?

1. What is Policy Period?

Policy Period (or Policy Term) is the official validity lifespan of your insurance contract. For health and motor policies, it is typically 1 year (or 2-3 years in multi-year policies). For term life insurance, it can be 20 to 40 years.

2. What is Waiting Period?

Waiting Period is the specific timeframe from policy commencement during which certain claims are excluded. Health insurance has three distinct waiting periods:

  • Initial 30-Day Waiting Period: No medical claims are payable in the first 30 days, except emergency hospitalization caused by accidental injury.
  • Specific Illness Waiting Period (12 to 24 Months): Covers common procedures like cataract, hernia, kidney stones, piles, and joint replacement only after 1 or 2 policy years.
  • Pre-Existing Disease (PED) Waiting Period (12 to 36 Months): Covers pre-disclosed chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension after 1 to 3 continuous policy years.

3. How Renewal & Portability Protect Your Waiting Period

When you renew your policy on time or port your policy to another insurer under IRDAI Portability Norms, your completed waiting period credits are carried forward 100%. You do not have to serve the waiting period again!

Recommended Action Checklist

  • Buy health insurance early when you are young and disease-free to serve waiting periods smoothly.
  • Never allow a health policy to lapse past the 30-day grace period to preserve waiting period credits.
  • Apply for policy portability at least 45 days before renewal.
